every time I switch on my comp the firewall is stoped. When I enable it the avg display panel freezes but the firewall starts to work.I have to do a ctl alt & delete to get rid of the display panel I think this as only happened since I updated windows xp with sp3.Anyone any ideas please?

Try uninstalling AVG 8 and then reinstall with the latest build. That worked when something similar happened to me.
