AUTOMATIC SHUTDOWN AFTER 5 MINUTES

My parents purchased a Packard Bell computer approx 16 months ago when they retired. Unfortunately the computer has spent most of it's life switched off. They have now decided they want to use in and enjoy the internet..... we eventually got a BT Openworld pay-as-you-go disc- which I have installed for her. We have been able to connect to the internet.

There is however a problem... when I was trying to register on BT Openworld- after approx 5 mins a grey box comes up that says in basic terms the following...

THIS SYSTEM IS SHUTTING DOWN
THIS SHUTDOWN WAS INITIATED BY NT AUTHORITY/SYSTEM

There is a 60 second timer counting down and then underneath the timer...

WINDOWS MUST RESTART BECAUSE THE REMOTE PROCEDURE CALL ( RPC) SERVICE
TERMINATED UNEXPECTEDLY.

System is running on Windows XP.
Any ideas because now she is on the internet, after approx 5 mins this box continues to show, and after the 60 seconds it completely re
boots the computer, which is frustrating. (and I am getting a lot of earache)

Tks

Dave

Type: shutdown -a

Click OK.

Should allow you to download the above.

oops bit more info
it sounds like the machine has the ms blaster internet worm which attacks remote procedures on unprotected machines stinger will remove this for you and the patch will prevent it from returning
