Attempt to access invalid address

I have a few older programs that are 16 bit and ran well on XP Pro until 2 days ago - now I get the message above.

I have found references circa 2004-2005, these suggest an infection but all scans Avast, MBAM, A Squared, FSecure Blacklight antiroot kit and Symantec Backdoor specific removal tool have found nothing.

Some users said their programs ran in safe mode but mine do not. I've tried reinstall in compatibility modes but no joy there either. I'm wondering if a MS update might have done something but I doubt it. OR could it be over zealous registry cleaning? I have backups so I can try this if necessary...

I don't use System Restore before someone suggests this!

I've restored various files Windows XP system files, autoexec.nt and config.nt in case this was a problem. No change.

I have merged the registry with one a backup from a couple of months ago. No change.

Can't reinstall the programs either, as I hit the same error message each time even in compatibility modes and seperate memory space.

Anyone feel like pitching in?

Finally tracked this issue down to a recent update to Comodo Firewall - this appear to prevent all my older 16 bit programs including Family Tree Maker from 1995, Sage etc

Disaster averted - Hope this helps someone else.
