ATI HD 2900 1Gb or NVidia Geforce 8800 GTX

I'm looking at building a new desktop system and not too sure which graphics card to go with. The GeForce 8800 GTX seems to do well against the ATI HD 2900 XT 512 MB but how does the GTX measure up to the HD 2900 XT 1GB?

Also if I'm going with the HD 2900 I'll need a good crossfire motherboard - is there any crossfire motherboards out there as good as the P5N-32E SLI motherboard?

Most of my reading to date has been on SLI/GTX systems but the new HD 2900 with 1GB memory has me thinking of alternatives.

I'll be looking to get a system with one card initially then add a second graphics card later when they are a little cheaper.

Thanks for any help.

the GeForce 8800 GTX, beats the ATI chip hands down, no matter how much memory the 2900 may have.

The 2900, is on a par (gaming frame rates) with the 8800 GTS.

1Gb of memory will not at this time, make any difference to the speed of the card.

The 1 Gb version uses DDR4 memory whereas the 512 mb version and the GTX use DDR3. I dont think there are any other major differences between the two radeon cards but the faster memory should help.

Still reading up on this though.
