asus a8n-sli deluxe mb nuking hard drives.

I've got a asus a8n-sli deluxe motherboard which seems to have a problem in relation to IDE devices, I recently had to remove my Primary slave hard drive as it kept making clicking noises and eventually stopped working.

I removed the drive and from then on during boot up, the IDE device scan would take ages, over a minute, yesterday I got myself a new hard drive and have installed it as primary slave and I've now noticed that that is now clicking in exactly the same way as the last one did.

Any clues as to what is the cause of this problem ??

Dodgy hard drives? I really can't see why a motherboard would cause problems like this; though you might be better off using Sata drives.

It just seens too coincedental for it to be two bad drives, the symptoms are identical and the fact the bootup is so slow during the IDE scan, the only thing I've not tried is another IDE cable.

These are secondary drives for file storage, I use a SATA Raid for my system.
