Are laptops fussy about which HDD installed

Got to replace a Samsung HM160HI SATA that has failed in a Dell laptop.

I assume it doesn't have to be the same capacity or speed, because faster, larger drives are available now at reasonable prices.

Grateful for any advice

None whatsoever. You can use any SATA drive.

Yes they can be that's why when I do one I try to put the same make drive in. It may not be if its SATA. But IDE are not the same. Its best to take the drive out and get one same make, I do believe that this Laptop is a fairly old Laptop with a IDE drive
