AOL pop ups/spam messages

  [DELETED] 13:49 31 Dec 2003

I've just connected with AOL and when I'm online I get constant messages popping up in the middle of the screen. It looks like an instant message, but is just spam mainly advertising man's shortcomings and women wanting to do allsorts! Where are they coming from? Is it AOL? Can I stop them as they're driving me mad!?!

Go to settings on the top AOL toolbar and click preferences and click on pop ups.

I also use AOL and have Shoot The Messenger as recommended by VoG [VERY good program!] I have no issues now with pop up advertising at all and only receive the usual junk offering me viagra and other chemical enhancers by email, not pop ups. I tend to receive about 10 per day [so much for the AOL spam filter then ;o)] and sometimes it becomes laborious deleting them all.

But I take the view that this is one of the negatives one has to accept to enjoy all the positives of surfing? I cannot set up auto-filter as the tag lines are usually different and tend to use wording that my personal emails would also use.

thnx paul
spam email i can handle, but them messages popping up while i'm surfing!! mostly about penis size! i downloaded shoot the messenger. it was an application file and i ran it straight away. this bought up the window as shown in VoG's link ie a window saying "messenger service is currently running" as seen click here. However the messages kept on popping up. about one every 15 minutes! am i doing something wrong?

Yes. Click Disable Messenger. This service is being used to send you the messages. You need to disable it to stop them.

As J2K says, you have simply got confirmation that Messenger is active - which it obviously is as you receive the messages. Now you need to disable it.

I guess they'll be no more pop ups after. But one thing I've often wondered about is why I also receive the 'penis enlargement' ads despite this wonderful thing called targeted advertising - maybe my wife has been talking to the doctors again ;o)))

Let us know if this cures the problem.
