Another Failed SP3 Install

  dogbreath1 20:48 13 Jun 2008

Crikey, this beast really is hit or miss.

Current score, successes- 3 failures- 2!!

Latest failure, C.WINDOWS\$NTServicePackUninstall$\reg00161 (access denied)

followed by, after opting to ignore this, 'Service Pack 3 Setup...Access denied'.

Ideas, anyone?

Your anti virus / antispyware may be blocking access to the registry.

1. Make a backup of your registry.

2. Download and install subinacl.exe.

3. Create a file called reset.cmd with Notepad. Copy the text below into the file reset.cmd and run reset.cmd with administrative rights (it may take a LONG time):

cd /d "%ProgramFiles%\Windows Resource Kits\Tools"
subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE /grant=administrators=f /grant=system=f
subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CURRENT_USER /grant=administrators=f /grant=system=f
subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT /grant=administrators=f /grant=system=f
subinacl /subdirectories %SystemDrive% /grant=administrators=f /grant=system=f
subinacl /subdirectories %windir%*.* /grant=administrators=f /grant=system=f
secedit /configure /cfg %windir%\inf\defltbase.inf /db defltbase.sdb /verbose

4. Reboot at SAFE MODE and try install SP3 again.

It's been quite a while since Fruit Bat /\0/\'s advice was posted here. I've been busy and have just got round to trying it out until today.

In a nutshell, it worked fine.

Tbh, I didn't go for the Safe Mode install. I was fairly confident that the registry modifications were probably all that were required. I must admit to disabling Teatimer, but apart from that, I proceeded as per the advice.

Thanks very much for the pointer. I am indebted! ;)

After disabling Avast and ZoneAlarm, the final one of five XP machines decided it would let me update it to SP3.

Oh joy!

Judging by the numerous threads on this subject, it seems quite a few guys are not finding the update to be straightforward!!

I had this problem initially with SP3 just over 2 weeks ago. Even though I disabled both the firewall and Antivirus beforehand, it still wouldn't fully instal.

As it happened, I needed to do a OS recovery and then it installed OK.
