I am about to upgrade and not too sure which way to go AMD socket754 or 939, anyone tell me the difference (besides price) and which is the better.

939 is the newest and will be around for the longest. Motherboards with 939 pins are arriving now with PCI express sockets. For a system that is to remain upgradeable at cutting edge level for longest it is the way to go

But at the moment it's expensive

754 will take a full range of processors now and AMD says it will remain upgradeable for some time. It is much more reasonably priced

The best answer for value may well be a 754 processor with Athlon 64 3400 Newcastle.

However, it has to be said that for most folk any of these will provide performance they are unlikely to use

Asus A8V-Deluxe Sock939 with 8Ch Snd, Lan Motherboard
1 x £64.95

AMD Athlon64 3000+ Socket939 (Winchester) CPU 1 x £85.95
This is a good price, but as you say will I ever use the power, Mind a few years ago Didn't we say the same about a Pentium 100.

At those prices 939 is obviously the way to go

However the site I looked at didn't have full spec (or stock) of that motherboard

It will be worth choosing one that has firewire etc. You might not need it today but a board with it should cost very little more

PCI express may also be worth waiting a couple of weeks for
