AMD 4000 OR P4 3.4

Which would give best all round performance is
it right that AMD are better for gaming and P4
better in general applications.

Also i am using opera browser and using full
width of message box but it appears only halfway

AMD have just beaten Intel's best offering in Woddchips link.In every test AMD bettered Intel.The conclusion of the article is AMD gives best bang for buck.

I would reach £1000 if it seems a good buy and

There are bigger things in life to worry about. I'm not losing any sleep over picking an Intel CPU that might be a tiny nano-second slower than what I could have chosen.

Go for the dual core AMD would be my advice - the newer ones sell at a premium but your credit card need not take a hit for £1,000.
