Advise on upgrading to XP pro

  Dearersteak 19:01 11 May 2003

I'm on 98 at the mo, and am getting a copy of XP pro, Its the full version, but at the mo, i'm on 98. Can i just upgrade from 98 to XP Pro with the full version CD, and not lose all my work, Or is it a case of having to format, then install from scarth?

You can just upgrade like you say. Just back up all of your work first to be on the safe side.

However it's probably best to format and do a clean install of XP pro.

Ok, well, also, I'm only running a 600mhz AMD, with 128 sd, which i intend to bring up to 256, Will the 600Mhz Run Pro or will it sturgle?

I think the memory is the main thing. I had XP HE running with only 128 MB and it didn't exactly struggle but adding more RAM has speeded everything up noticeably,

A friend of mine is running XP Pro. on a pentium 3. 450mhz CPU, at first it was a little slow with 128m. of ram, but after increasing this to 256meg. it runs very well. J.

Well if i were tell you that i played a DVD on XP using a 350Mhz processor with 256MB RAM, with a little 8MB card...

RAM is the thing with XP (processor helps as well). As your going to go to 256MB you'll be ok.

I was still typing as you posted :o)

Yes, he can watch his movies with no problem using a Voodoo 3 3000 graphics card. This is quite an old card now but was highly rated only a couple of years back. Think the card has 16 meg. of memory and a 133 processor built in. J.
