advice on usb optical mouse please

  sunny staines 16:18 11 Oct 2007

using ms explorer optical usb mouse every now and then the light on the mouse goes out or dim and the pointer freezes on screen. unplugging and changing to another usb socket makes no difference, nor does reinstall of driver. only reboot of the pc gets it going again.

any advice please, happens about once a week.

New batteries? I had a similar problem and it turned out to be the battery compartment.

The PC may be swithing off the USB port to conserve power.

In device manager - expand USB devices - right click on each root hub in turn - select properties - power management tab - untick Allow the computer to turn off....

Remove the mouse software from Add Remove, and let windows provide the driver

The lead could have failed where it enters the mouse. To prove, hold the mouse and waggle the lead.
