ADSL Router with VOIP

If an ADSL router has one or more VOIP ports, what can you plug into these? Can you plug in a standard phone and make calls, or do you need a special phone designed to handle VOIP?

Suggest you look at the website of the manufacturer of the router, there may be a supportpage or FAQ or 'contact us'

Thanks for your reply terryf. That's one way I guess, but I've never found manufacturer info as helpful as people's experience. It involves a bit more than just the router, eg, where does the VOIP software go (eg Skype, VOIP Cheap, etc) or is this software actually needed?
