BB is due to reach our village next month and I am looking at the modem situation.

It seems that most people have an external ADSL modem but wonder why when an internal ADSL modems are much cheaper - with less clutter.

I have used an internal modem from day one, and suffered far less problems than many using USB devices; in fact, no problems at all.

The downside is, if you think you may want to introduce a router later on for a home network, you would need to buy another (external) modem to enable this to work.

Thanks for the info.

The Broadband provider will often post you a modem as part of the deal. This will inevitably be a USB modem. It's a 'one size fits all' situation.
