Acer laptop unable to read cd-r's

I have an Acer travelmate 2201 laptop but whenever I put a CD-R into the drive all that happens is the drive seems to be hunting for any files, this carries on and stops the explorer window from responding. I have XP home with service pack 2 installed, could it be something to do with SP2, because the drive is a DVD-R so it should play them, the discs run OK on my desktop

different dives can have problems with certain makes of CDs especially if not good quality.

Use a lens cleaner in the drive and polish the CD and retry.

Will the drive read a proper CD? if not then the CD lens in the drive may be faulty.

the CD's are Sony and it will open a DVD-r OK. It will run a proper CD OK as well
