Acer Laptop ecovery problem

  yfas29 19:20 08 May 2010

Hi all

My step dad has dropped his laptop round and asked if I could fix it. Basically it won't boot and gets stuck in a loop restarting every time it tries to load vista. He dosen't have a recovery dvd so i have been trying to install my old copy of vista on. However when trying to install vista the installation cant see the hard drive and therefore won't install.

Any ideas what might be going on here?

You may need to create a Vista Boot disk first, see link.

It could be the HDD has been dislodged or damaged or the boot sector is damaged find out what make the drive is and download the diagnostic tool from the maker and burn it to disc and boot from that.

Acer Laptops have a recovery built in and you may find that the better option.

My Acer Aspire 5535 has a Hitachi drive click here
I had a similar problem with mine it also would not recognise the drive I managed to save data using Ubuntu live CD then the Hitachi tool to repair sector.

When you switch on from cold you may see a quick screen "Boot from AHCI" or something similar.

Hit a key to try it - you'll need to be a bit quick, it's a very short screen.

If you can get it this will boot from the recovery partition.

It may do a total reinstall though - all data gone.
