Acer Aspire 3000 laptop won't start

  Beverley Anne 17:17 16 Jul 2008

my sister has a problem with her Acer Aspire 3000
laptop it won't start at all. She has brought a new an AC adaptor and tried it without the battery installed still nothing. No lights lighting up slso no sound.

I think it is dead.

I don't know if its the motherboard.
I've suggested taking out the HD and putting it in a caddy to and running it on another pc.

I think the laptop is over a year old

Any one got any ideas what she could try

Thanks inadvance

If there are no lights at all when you hit the power switch and you have tried different power sources then its not looking good. Either the power switch, the PSU or the motherboard have probably had it.
A caddy would work to recover any documents your sister wants saved.

1) Remove the battery.

2) with the powre cord removed, press and hold down the power on button for 30 seconds.

3) Replave the battery and mains cord

4) Try powering on again.

Thanks for the replies.

I passed the info on to my sister this afternoon but it didn't work for her.

She is going to get a caddy for the hard drive.

Not looking good , how old is it?

Any chance of it being still under guarantee?

Was it secondhand?

There is a way of getting a good idea of how old it really is in the manufacturer's website via the model and serial number. I've done this with mine when it was new and I found that my PC was several months younger than the matching monitor.

It might be something simple that won't cost much to repair. I wouldn't write it off just yet.

Hello Fruit Bat /\0/\

Thanks for reading.

I think my sister has had it over a year
She hadn't took out an extended warrant for the laptop.

Hi katkins

It was a new laptop. I haven't clue what the serial number is. I spoked to her this evening she said her going bring it over to my house so I can see if there's anything I can do.

But to be honest I haven't got a clue where to start.

Anyhow thanks for reading and replying.

I'm afraid it sounds like the internal voltage controller and power supply have failed. Get her to take it to a local repair shope for a free repair quote.

If it's as I suspect, then this really isn't going to be economic I'm afraid.
