2nd HDD wont format

  iamalipaul 22:22 15 Jun 2010

I was given an old 40gb HDD Samsung I think, that I have added to my PC, I was going to use as a back up drive. It did have XP on it which I tried to get rid of by formatting, the drive wont format - not with XP or using the XP disc. I can see the drive as D under my computer and the capacity is correct but the file properties are RAW. Is there a utility that will format for me?

PC is AMD 1700XP 1.5 Gb RAM running XP home.

1) click start

2) Right click My Computer then click manage

3) click disk managerment.........wait for it to load

4) if you can see that drive there, then try delete the partition, then format to NTFS

You need to do it through disk management.

Right click my computer
select Manage - Storage - disk management -

select the drive - make a partition - then format.

Excellent. When you buy a brand new hard drive, there is no format on the hard drive at all & the only way you can see the hard drive is to go to Disk Management & then format it from there.
