2 Routers, which one should I connect to?

Hey guys, I currently live in a shared house with 6 people who use the Internet. I connect to the Internet wired not wireless. The main router is placed at the first floor. One of them bought and connected a second router to put on the second floor because he was getting bad connection as he lives on the 3rd floor. I live in the second floor and I use the Internet all the time. Should I connect to the second or main router? Because ever since I connected to the second one I've been getting bad connection and I don't know if he can like control the amount of bandwidth. The first router is virgin media and second is an old Belkin router. The second router is connected to the first router by Ethernet. Which is more secure? Thank you.

Are you saying that you run an ethernet cable from the 2nd floor to the first floor. And the chap upstairs from you runs the cable from the first floor to the 2nd floor. Must be a mass of cables in your house.

If you get a better signal from the original router use that.
