Check device manager for exclamation marks against your sound card drivers

there are no exclamation signs

have you ensured that, from Sound and Audio Devices in Control Panel (General tab), that the Mute box is not ticked?

You should also check out the Volume icon's configuration for similar Muted sections.

You might also have to ensure that onboard sound is Enabled in the Bios.

  Stuartli 21:50 04 Feb 2007

It can vary according to the particular Bios provider - usually on the lines of Onboard or AC97.
