Most university students tend to have budget-range laptops for two reasons - they are less attractive to thieves, and more attractive to the parents who have to pay for them. In the main, the computers have a fairly short working life; once the course is over they are used for a further year, and then replaced with something better.

Unless the student is embarking on a course that involves heavy use of graphics and image manipulation, you'll find that today's budget machines will easily cope with a university workload. Take a look at this.
