New scanner advice

  Carafaraday 11:00 03 Jul 2004

I need a new scanner to go with Windows XP. Cheap and cheerful, but needs to be able to do good copies of text, with text recognition software, and be capable of scanning in old photos. Speed is now an issue, and I don't have USB2. Does this mean that I am restricted in my choice, or will USB2 work ok with USB1 just more slowly?

Advice please.

Almost any scanner on the market will do what you want it to do. Most come with an OCR of some description, (Omnipage or Textbridge) are the common ones. Yes, USB2 will work on USB 1 ports. I have USB 1 and have not noticed much difference in the speed.

Anyone bought a cheap and cheerful scanner recently - around the £50 mark? Any comments good or bad?

My old Umax finally packed, so I bought a Mustek 1200U £35 from click here

The Umax was a parallel scanner. The Mustek is USB2. Works perfectly, does what I want. Doesn't accept Film Negatives or Slides, but I have a dedicated film scanner anyway.

I also have a Canon Lide 20 but the dpi is only 600 as opposed to the Mustek 1200.

I bought one of these a few week ago from PCWorld for £34.99.

Can't beat it at this price. I've scanned text and photo's with goo results.

Thanks, both, for your goo(d) and helpful replies.

I've recently bought the Canoscan Lide 50 and am very pleased with it. It's small and light, USB2 connection and, what I also like, has a hinged bracket so that you can lift the lid to fit over a book or magazine.
It's just over your £50 budget from Ebuyer but there is the Lide 20 for around the thirty quid mark.

Thanks, blanco - I've been looking at the canoscan LiDE 30 which is around £45 - probably similar. I like the idea of a Z lid (think that's what they call it) too, but am not sure if the 30 has it.

I bought a Canon 3200f on Friday, excellent results, for £59.99 from Argos well worth the extra. It's also a film scanner.

click here. I like the 3200F as you will see from this thread it also has the z lid.
