Lidl digital camera

Got the Lidl flyer for May 17th during a visit to our local store this morning, which includes details of a 4MP digital camera.

Labelled as a Nytech (the model number is obscured by details on its illustration, but ends in 020), it has an optical 3x zoom lens plus several digital zoom settings, special sports photography mode and macro mode.

Other features mentioned include audio recording, automatic and manual white balance settings, video-out, red eye reductioon, self-timer, 64MB Secure Digital card, four x 2000mAh rechargeable batteries and quick recharger, USB cable and carry case. Price is £169 with three year warranty. Just looks somewhat old-fashioned to my eyes.

Also on the flyer are a Lexmark P704 inkjet printer at £39.99 (looks like the Z601) with 15 sheets of premium photo paper and a Typhoon 5.1 speaker system at the same price - Typhoon is a rebadger so no doubt someone will recognise where they originate from.

Judging by this, the Nytech could prove to be the ND-4020 as the flyer illustration matches:

Just discovered that Littlewoods Extra is selling the Olympus 350Z at £139.99, so did a quick price check as it seemed a good price for an excellent product.

Pantheronline advertises it at £119.99 and in stock - a check on the website reveals, in fact, that it is out of stock; Pixmania price is £127 with a two year warranty (I know it's French based!) but is out of stock....

AJ Electronics is asking you to cough up £221 for the privilege of owning it.

No wonder the amazing world of the Internet helps to save so many of us vast sums of money by avoiding paying out far more than we really need to do...:-)

Difficult, unless someone recognises it under another name.

Most digital cameras are made in Taiwan by companies such as Minton Optical Co Ltd (Trust and Jenoptik have rebadged its models in the past):

In fact it was reported last year that 67 per cent of digital cameras sold in America had been produced in Taiwan.

Another report states:

"The Japanese top five, i.e. Sony, Canon, Fuji, Nikon and Olympus, captured about 82 percent of the total digital still camera market in 2002. With the market expected to reach 41 million units in 2003, all eyes are on the Japanese companies to see if they can retain their domination.

"However, the rise of camera production among the Taiwanese ODMs/OEMs is becoming a thorn in the side of the Japanese.

"On one hand, some of the top five Japanese companies are using Taiwanese manufacturers to produce their cameras. On the other hand, those same Taiwanese companies are releasing cameras with their own brand names and are selling them at prices that undercut the Japanese."

More rebranding details:

"Many of the cameras produced by the Taiwanese are slated for resale by Japanese and U.S. brand names.

"Premier makes cameras for Fuji, Minolta and Konica; Altek for HP and Kodak; Primax for Minolta and Philips; Ability Enterprise for Casio and Asia Optical for Olympus, Ricoh, HP and Kodak.

"Ability, Primier and Altek also have sold significant numbers of their own-branded cameras to U.S. and European distributors.

"For example, Ability manufactures a 4-Megapixel camera for Casio, but also makes its own 5-Megapixel camera. Many of the emerging companies in the digital still camera market, such as Gateway, BenQ, Legend, Founder Technology and Concord, are leaning heavily toward these Taiwanese companies, which play dual roles as ODMs and OEMs."

(By the way, Concord markets the Polaroid models under licence).

It really is a minefield trying to find out who makes what...:-))

I think the Aldi one is a Tevion one.

  Stuartli 13:22 14 May 2004

Well Tevion rebadges other manufacturer' products - it's linked to Medion...:-)
