Laptop recommendation.

My son wants to aquire a laptop and is prepared to spend approx. £450 on one. He has looked at the Advent 7150 and the Toshiba Equium M50-244, both at PCWorld. He has also looked at the Dell Inspiron 1300 on line.

Has anyone any comments to make of any of these specific machines or the build quality in general of those three manufacturers? In addition, if anyone has suggestions for other makes and models within his price range, I would be very grateful. The laptop would need to be wireless enabled.

There is only one laptop maker you need concern yourself with - and that is Dell.

They are the biggest PC/laptop maker in the world and IMHO their build quality is beyond reproach.

Admittedly their customer service is not brilliant. But if you are buying a first class laptop, you are hardly likely to need Customer Service. ;-))

Yes I agree that Dell are excellent but with the caveat you have added. I also have a Toshiba laptop which (touch wood) has performed faultlessly for 4 years.

My comments were (somewhat) tongue in cheek.

I've always used Dell (both PCs and laptops) without problem and I readily admit that I'm an unashamed fan of their kit. :-)))

Thanks Jackcoms and anskyber for your comments, I will mull them over with my son.

I am a fan of Dell (also tongue in cheek). My current PC is a 9150 and again it has been faultless.

Have bought two Dell Inspiron 6400 laptops recently, both are fantastic. just one tip - they come preloaded with a lot of Dell "bloatware" - make sure you get rid of it all.
