You need a DVD rom (reader) drive but not a DVD writer. You will obviously need a CD writer.

If it is data, you do not need any speical software.

If you want to copy movie, you have to use some lossy compression software (i.e. loss of quality). Both Nero CD/DVD burning and Roxio Digital Media 7 have the component for this purpose.

However, do not even think of copying DVD movies which are copy protected. Firstly, it is illegal. Copying even for "backup" purpose is illegal. Secondly, you cannot copy without special softwares. The use of a special software to copy copy-protected materials is ILLEGAL.

If you want to copy copy-protected movies, do not ask question here.

ILLEGAL Doesn't that mean do it but don't get caught?

Means some multi-million pound corporation
will lose a lot of money, not so funny in the long run.
If they do go out of business are the pirates going to make the movies.
I know they are dear when they come out initially,
but if you wait a couple of months they become reasonable.
