Dodgy e-mail from Virgin Media?

Anybody received the following e-mail?

The return address is [email protected] - - - - - - -

I phoned Virgin Media this morning, they knew nothing about the e-mail.


Dear subscriber,

As part of our continuous effort in providing a higher level of service, we
are notifying every account owners about the congestions due
to the anonymous registration of accounts. To solve this problem, we are
shutting down some unused accounts within 24 hours.

To avoid shutting down your account, verify and inform us if you still want to
use the account by completing the form below. Your username, password, date of
birth and your country information are required.

* Username: .....
* Password: ...
* Date of Birth: .....
* Country Or Territory: ...

After following the instructions in the above, your account will not be
interrupted and will continue as normal. Thanks for your attention to this
request. We apologize for any inconveniences IT may cost you.

Warning! account owners that refuses to update his or her account after 3days
of receiving this warning will lose his or her account permanently. Online Customer Service.

That is without doubt a scam to try and steal your username and password. You will never receive a legit request like that.

I got this email purporting to be from Virgin earlier this week:

'This message is sent by a program on our data base to webmail user ensuring no one's inbox grows too large and prevent your mail accounts been shutting down, To help us re-set your SPACE on our database you must reply to this message and enter:Current User name:{ } and Password: { }

Not sure about it so I forwarded it to Virgin security. As yet they have not replied.

You would never be asked for your Username and Password unless it is being relayed via a secure Internet connection.

It certainly wouldn't be done by sending an e-mail...:-)

All three on their security section of the web site.

Virgin always address emails to me personally by name and never Dear subscriber, there's no question that email is a scam. If I get those dear subscriber ones they get consigned to the trash can.

I never ever enter passwords or usernames in any email document, period! If an email arrives informing me of a problem with some service or other I contact the concerned parties direct, by phone if possable, and never using information on the email.

You did right contacting Virgin but I myself wouldn't have bothered and just deleted it. I would imagine Virgin would contact you with a letter by post if they were going to change your service and not by email. They may email you of changes to inform you, perhaps of price changes. But I doubt if any company, including Virgin would email you asking for account information.
