Choice stationary security breech !!!!!!

I have just received an email from Choice Stationary addressed to my credit card number (shown in full)!!!!

These details have now been sent over the internet for virtually anybody to intercept and see.

How on earth could they be so bloody stupid. I tried to call them but they have closed for the day. I have no choice I guess now but to cancel my card and get a new one issued.

It is a mistake so finger off the panic button. If anyone uses the number you WILL be fully refunded by the card company. Changing your number is not a difficult thing. Choice are an excellent company and I suspect that this is human error like the mistakes you and I have made countless number of times. Credit card numbers are ultra easy to get if you want to, epecially for anyone working in retail, so this is not a massive security threat.

So just because somebody makes a "mistake" and broadcasts my credit card number I'm supposed to just say "oh okay, don't worry about it".

I'm sorry, but I don't call this a "mistake", I call it incompetence. I don't appreciate having to cancel my card, and be without one for a few days / weeks just because somebody can't do their job properly.

My bank don't consider this to be a minor mistake either. One of their legal reps is going to phone me tomorrow morning to discuss it (their suggestion, not mine).

I know that the chances of my card being used are small, but thats not the point.

This is obviously an error, albeit a stupid one, and errors occur every day and in every walk of life. So far no harm has been done, and the chances of any unauthorised third party getting your card number are remote in the extreme. Sending something over the Internet does not mean that it's there for "virtually anybody to intercept and see", in fact it's extremely difficult to intercept email en route.

There's no need to cancel your card - you'll be totally covered in the unlikely event of any fraudulent use, and as for one of the bank's 'legal reps' phoning you to discuss it - what on earth is there to discuss?

My advice - forget it, and get on with your life. Choice stationery is a good company, and have deservedly won many awards. Phone them, they'll apologise profusely I'm sure.

You will be without the card for a few one has ever died/starved from this loss. I have read that people used to be able to survive for years without a credit/debit card, IIRC.

Whilst annoying and a mistake I think you are way OTT with your ire. Take a chill pill from Dr Relax, in the knowledge that all will be sorted soon.

Go to any Tescos Petrol store where they use Pay At Pump and it is quite likely you will be able to pick up a whole collection of receipts with full credit card details on them. The fact your's have been sent by email, as has been pointed out is insignificant in the scale of things.

In my book you are not wasting your time, as you have brought a problem to the attention of others all be it at your expense (no pun intended)and we will all learn from that.
I feel that this has really shook you up and I can fully understand how you feel at this moment in time. To see such personal details in your email would no doubt really worry anyone, but you have at least been notified of the mistake and have already taken action to remedy the problem, and after a good night's sleep (one eye open!) I bet you get it sorted tomorrow, I'm also sure that this infringement of your personal details will be duly given a full and through investigation from Choice, and deservedly so.
One last thing, a while back I recieved my bank statement and was horrified to find that someone had bought a pair of bikes, and run up a porn chat line up to the value of £800 all on my behalf (good of them eh) this was done by someone getting my credit details from a Petrol transaction, they raided the waste bins overnight, unfortunately the Petrol Station did not shred receipts. Not just me but many in East Lancs were affected over a 3 month period, the bank were great, the police were great and I got all the money back.

Don't worry too much and post back please it will all be ok I'm sure.

I just called Choice after they failed to call me.

Their answer was that their system never makes mistakes and it must all be down to my stupidity.

The lady I spoke to says that I must have enetered my credit card number in the name field of an order form. Why on earth would I do that? Talk about passing the buck. I have filled in hundreds of forms and ordered dozens of items over the internet. I think I know the difference between a Name field and a Credit Card field.

No apology was offered at all, as some people above suggested would be. And before you ask, I was extremely polite on the phone.

As far as Choice is concerned this isn't their problem and they aren't interested in finding out what happened.

They now have one less customer.

At the end of the day, you are the one who will loose out here as Choice are a great company to buy from and are one of the better suppliers of compatablie ink. You will now have to find somewhere else to shop.

Just because you have filled in dozens of forms in the past doesn't always mean you did this one correctly. There have been times where I've made mistakes and I fill the things in all the time.

All that is likely to have happened was that the chance of getting hold of your details was increased. Someone actually doing so is very very small. Statistics still suggest its safer to buy over the Net than it is to buy something in a restraunt when you let your card out of sight.

I've just looked back at my past orders from Choice and they all look like automated responses. If yours was just an order acknoledgement then I would suggest either their was a glitch in the processing of your form (that Choice wouldn't know about) or you made a mistake.

At the end of the day you are going to stop buying form a reasonable company because of a problem that hasn't cost you anything at all.

I for one would still like to know what your banks legal department is going to say...!
