iMac Pro review
anyone got any recomendations for decent anti-virus software/bundle. I was going to get Norton, but reviews for 2004 product don't seem good. Should I go for 2003 version, latest Mcafre or something else (I'm going to need to scan a whole hard disc, which will probably be riddled with nasties, through which ever application I get, if that makes any difference)
Jester2K II beat me to it. I used to use a paid-for anti-virus package, but had to pay each year to renew the ability to get updates [with the 'usual' telesales call to update the base software]. I read the various postings about the free version and thought "I cannot be as good as the one I currently pay for"
Well, I have been eating humble pie for a year now. The only minor issue is that you cannot scan individual files - although you CAN check .EXE and others before opening just by right-clicking. Wouldn't change now ......
As above AVG is highly recommended, the free version is what I use and never have any problems.
Just a thought, but I guess you should be looking at a spyware remover such as Ad-Aware and/or Spybot as well .......
Get AVG from click here then get sybot and ad-aware then you will be sorted!
seems to be superb! I have this and sygate firewall and I am delighted with how they are working. Flawless!
Don't take my word for it:
It's dead easy to install and run, and overall is superb. Honest
Are you are tired of Norton and McAfee already?? Do you think that you need a better antivirus package which protects your computer from malicious virusses and worms but at the same time doesnt eat up much of your system resources? Well I got a perfect match for you. AVAST! is probably the best antivirus software you can get your hands on. Its simple to use, has excellent features and above all it doesnt make you feel like you need more RAM everytime you start up your computer.
The two most famous antivirus packages viz Norton Antivirus and McAfee are too much for some systems especially if you are running Windows 2000 with 64 MB RAM (yeah thats me). Around one and a half month back, my computer was infected by a malicious worm which would create fictitious .exe files in the Windows/System32 folder and that file would take up most of my system resources. It also messed around with my antivirus software (Norton) and made it impossible to work. Luckily I got a fix from the Symantec website but I needed to reinstall Norton Antivirus. So I searched around for other antivirus softwares that were as good and luckily I came across AVAST!. Developed and marketed by a Czech company Alwil Trade Ltd, AVAST! had all the features you can ask for in an antivirus package. It got the regular scanner for all the disk and removable drives, it got a on-access scanner which is like McAfees V Shield of Norton AutoProtect, it got a mail scanner which scans both incoming and outgoing mail, online update and so on. The best feature about this email scanner is that it wont let the inbox be accessed without being scanner neither would it let an email be sent without scanning. Reaching the POP3 or SMTP server becomes impossible without the mail scanner running in the background, so whatever happens a virus cannot get into your computer through your email. The update doesnt take much time even on days when the connection is slow just the opposite of Norton LiveUpdate which takes a considerable amount of time.
The most attractive feature is that it doesnt eat up your computer’s system resources unlike other softwares like Norton’s AutoProtect and McAfee’s VShield which make their presence felt because you know they are running when your system slows down considerably. All said and done, AVAST! is the best antivirus software on the planet.
avast! click here
Have been using Norton for years, there is nothing to beat it out there...
Updated virus definitions can be obtained from sites such as Tucows weekly
I wouldn't be without my Norton Internet Security/antivirus package (2003) never had and attacks succeed yet (touch wood) also use webroot spy sweeper to stop adware and spies.
click here well worth the money.
