Advice on a Laptop Please!

  Tinderstick 20:40 16 Oct 2005

I would really appreciate any advice on buying my first Laptop. My budget is only approx 5 - 600 so I appreciate I will have to accept a unit at the lower spec end. I am finally getting round to replacing an ageing Desktop (Pent III, 500mhz) which is still doing me a service but is creaking. I did consider another Desktop but I would really appreciate the benefits of a smaller portable unit. My use would be for:

*General Internet Use
*Running some Web Design Software (Dreamweaver, Fireworks etc...)
* Downloading Mp3's etc...burning to CD
*Maybe watching DVD's although this not too important
" General Office apps (Outlook, Word etc...)

I have read the first time buyers post about getting no less than 512mb for running XP and the other good tips.

I have considered a Dell Inspiron 1200 Celeron. Any ideas?

Finally, I might yet go for a Desktop in a similar price range if I can get that much more power for the same price.

Thanks in advance for any tips!

PS - I am considering the following or a similar model by ASUS:

"For £519.95, the Acer Aspire 3003WLMi is an excellent budget laptop:

It has an AMD Sempron 3000+ 25w processor, 512mb RAM, 60GB HDD, DVDRW, 15.4" widescreen, wireless, 2.8kg weight."

"My budget is only approx 5 - 600"

You'll have to spend nearer the £600 you quote.

I have yet to see a laptop for £5. ;-)

I agree that Dell is a worthwhile option
