Are you logged in as an Administrator or User?

Only adminstrator accounts can install programs. Maybe this is the problem.

I think I am just a user but I am trying to install it from a m,agazine disc so I would have thought it should be o.k.

Doesn't matter - you need to be in an administrator account and not a user account to install ANY software.

So how do I get into an Administrator account. I have loaded plenty of other softwar3e without any problem so maybe I am in an Administrator account.

Control Panel, User Accounts, Under your account name does it say "Computer Administrator" or "Limited Account"

Have you installed Acrobat reader before (or tried to?)

Yes it does say Computer Administrator. Anyway, problem is solved by uninstalling previous version first, 6.0 then installed with no problem.
Thanks for your interest
