WD hard drive from an old Mac

I've got the sata hard drive from my old Mac, that has got photos, poems and mp3s on it that I haven't got anywhere else, and I'm trying to work out how to plug it into my new Mac via USB. I bought a snazzy cable for the flat pin section on the rear left hand side that leads to two USBs, but it won't power up when I plug it in. There's another eight pin section on the right side that I've no lead for, and I'm guessing that this would be for a power lead? WD 1.0TB SATA / 64MB Cache 92014) any ideas on what I need to do would be very much appreciated. x
