Updaing 8 year old Macbook

t have an 8 y/o Macbook which needs to be updated 1 I need new battery 2 What is the latest version of OS X I can upgrade it to (at 10.5.1 atm) 3 how much memory can I install I think it is 1 Db atm 4 Can I back it up to usb memory for this to happen

Is going to an Apple shop and getting a quote sensible or should I go third party ?

You don't say which "MacBook" you have. OS X El Capitan will run on:

MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer)

MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer)

MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer)

Can I back it up to usb memory for this to happen

For what to happen? You can create a clone of your MacBook's hard drive on external media with something like SuperDuper and this can be cloned back to the Mac's internal drive. SuperDuper clones are bootable.
