Replace optical drive with SSD

I have a mid 2012 Macbook Pro (Unibody) and I want to replace the optical drive with an SSD. I have read that if I install a SATA111 SSD I may have problems as the optical drive connection is only SATA1. But I have also read that SATA111 drives are SATA1 compatible. What's the true picture? I know that I will not get the full 6GB performance from the SSD, but I guess that this set up will still be faster than using an an external HDD on USB 3.0. And speed is quite important as I plan to use the new internal drive for video editing. I have already replaced the Macbook's original internal drive with an SSD and this runs perfectly.

If the Mac has Thunderbolt connection use that with an external SSD
