Possible Problem after Apple Quick Time Download

I downloaded Apple Qucktime to enable me to view some video film I had taken.
At around the same time the bottom taskbar on my desktop moved to the top of the screen - which I was able to move back. But also a space appeared at the top of the screen and the screen seemed to have widened - the people on the picture had all got fatter !.
Could you help me to put this right.

Your screen resolution has changed.

right click on an empty section of the desktop - Properties -settings tab - readjust the resolution to your choice (1024x768).

Have tried changing the screen resolution but the space is still at the top of the screen. It is only there when the desktop is open the rest of the time I do not have the space at all.
Any other ideas about how to get rid of it.
