Play AVI file on iPad, with SD Card Camera Reader?

I have a Bushnell trail cam Aggressur, it stores its stills and videos on an SD card. I purchased an Apple Lightning to SD Card Camera Reader to download the SD Card to either iPad or iPhone when out in the field. It downloads all the stills and videos, the stills can be opened ok, but the videos are greyed out with just AVI on them. I have searched and read various apps such as WALTR 2 and iSkysofft etc but it seems you need a Mac first to download the software and then connect your device to the laptop. Do these sotware apps work if directly downloaded to my phone or iPad as I do not have a laptop? It does not make it clear on the demo's. Not very good with this IT stuff, so simple easy to understand answers please!! Many thanks

Have you tried VLC for iOS? Available on App Store
