Photo export: iPhone to Macbook—files unreadable

Hi Guys, I need to get about 15,000 photos and 750 videos off my iPhone 5s. Is there ANY way to copy these files to a hard drive? (ie not just iTunes/iCloud) I tried a command string in terminal, but although it worked and the files did go to the remote drive on my Macbook, the files are unreadable (filetype: Unix executable). I JUST want to get these files off my phone so I have a secure 'back-up' to the cloud versions. There are images and videos of my Dad who dies recently, and I feel the need to have a non-cloud back-up if that makes sense—either on my Macbook hard drive or a hefty pen-drive. This must be possible surely? Help!
