Is an old Mac compatible with a new mouse?

I've just bought a 10 yr old iMac running El Capitan. Is a new Magic Mouse 2 compatible with it? Whatever I try the bluetooth 'handshake' isn't happening and the iMac isn't finding the mouse. Anyone have any suggestions, please?

At a guess I would say no as the old iMac probably doesnt have Bluetooth. Either buy a Bluetooth dongle or a wireless mouse. A new wireless mouse will have a usb dongle and should be plug & play.

Hi, It does have Bluetooth, and I have managed to get the original Magic Mouse to work, but I prefer the new Magic Mouse as it is a bit more versatile and saves having to keep a supply of replacement batteries handy.
