Non-app store software won't auto-update

I've had a strange problem for a while now. I think it's been since I upgraded my internal hard drive to a solid state one, but I'm not sure. Basically, any software not downloaded through the App Store doesn't seem to auto-update anymore. The most annoying one is Movie Collector which is updated quite regularly, but I have to keep going to the website, accessing my account and downloading the latest version manually.

Does anyone have any ideas what the problem might be?

I'm using an early 2011 MacBook Pro running Sierra 10.12.1, 2.3 GHz Intel Core i5 with 8GB RAM and a solid state hard drive (self-upgraded from the standard hard drive).
