Migration Manager and Time Machine

I'm new to the forum and hope nobody has already asked this question. I have 2 MacBooks: 1 - a 2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo (late 2007) running OSX 10.6.8 which is the highest level possible. 2 - a MacBook Pro (mid 2015) running OSX 10.13.4 I want to transfer data from the old unit to the new one. I have tried Migration Assistant. The old unit doesn't even detect the newer one. The newer one detects the old one but the icon has a yellow exclamation mark and a message says that the old unit doesn't differentiate between capital and small letters. This is a rough translation from the original which is in German. I have also tried Time Machine however, the external drive is detected but with the same message as Migration Assistant. Can anyone help me with this problem?

Thank you ennceebee
