Machine check 0x0000008e

  brooklynite 13:51 14 Dec 2005

Hi all

I'm a new member with pretty limited computer
Been getting lots of machine checks 0x0000008e,0xc00000005,0xad38dc06,0xad38db50,0x00000000

Sometimes get 5-10 a day - other days none at all.

I am running xp home
Dell 8300 1.5gb
Ati radeon 9000 graphics card

I have run memory testing programs - no problems
I have run cpu -stressing programs - no problems
I have run chkdsk - no problems
I'm sure it is not a virus or malware - I run
Trojan hunter daily as well as lavasoft and microsoft anti spyware.
Have also run a 'rootkit' discovery program - no problem
Have run sfc/scannow - no problem

The only hardware added was a laser mouse replacing a trackball mouse a few months ago - I did not update the mouse driver.

Thanks much for any insight in solving this

This may be a Memory issue.

Are there any error messages in the Event Viewer that may relate to this problem?

You can check the Event viewer, a service on windows that logs every application, system errors etc. To reach this, go to your control panel> administrative tools > and open event viewer look under the "System" and it should show an error marked with a Red X , and that is most probably why your computer rebooted by itself.

Thanks recap and press man for the response.

The Event Viewer pointed me to a possible infection
of the Hackdoor Virus but it wasn't detected by
McaFee,Ewido,Trojan Hunter or Bit Defender and I suspect it is not the answer but you both opened my eyes to reviewing the event viewer.

I suspect a driver problem but hav nothing but suspicion to back it up.

Thanks again
