IPod touch will not sync with MacBook Pro

I have an old MacBook Pro (2011). i recently bought a new IPod,touch for my husband and it will not sync (greyed out). I have upgraded to High Sierra. I have updated ITunes. I have unauthorised/reauthorised and quite frankly jumped through hoops but nothing seems to work. Not only that but my efforts have resulted in my Ipod which is a year old now not being recognised.
