Imac 2007 ( reconditfrom a university) formatting

Hi guys, I work in a University and recently one of the IT guys saved an Imac (2007 – probably Leopard) from the garbage can. The computer is okay but: 1) it won’t connect via airport to the wifi; 2) the audio is blocked; 3) there’s some university profile installed and sometimes it asks password that I don’t have. I was thinking that the best solution is to buy Leopard for the apple website and format the computer to erase all the university settings. Does it make sense to you? Or there is another way to go back to factory settings without buying the operative system that is a bit old now.

Thank you!
