How do I stop my MacBook Pro from overheating?

If it is an old machine it may be dusty inside. If you open it up and then use an "air duster" (a spray can of clean, dry air) to blow out all dust then this will help the air flow to keep the CPU cool. Also do not use the machine with it sitting on a soft cushion on your lap. The soft cushion will wrap around the air vents. Always ensure these vents are clear.

Agree with wiganken2. Dust is the most likely cause or blocked vents. You could buy a laptop cooler from somewhere like Amazon if the problem persists.

May be there are many better solution to your MacBook from overheating, I would suggest you to avoid running multiple programs at a time.
