4k TV resolution question with macbook and pro

Hi from a newbie, I have a Panasonic 4K TV, latest 40" model. If I connect it to my macbook (retina, 12", early 2016) using a USB-C to HDMI adapter cable, then it displays at 3840x2160, 60 Hz However if I use the same cable to connect to my macbook pro (15", 2018) then it's 3840x2160 at only 24 Hz, and no way in the settings to change the refresh rate. Any ideas?
