$1300 / £800 CAD machine, first-time build

  HoorayForHamish 00:20 23 Feb 2014

Hi, I'm a Product Design student at university in the UK and I have around £800 to spend, all in. I need a PC to handle:

  • CAD (Creo, SolidWorks)

  • Mid-range gaming (doubt I'll be using Ultra settings)

  • Maybe Photoshop and some rendering programs too.

I'll need everything except speakers, which I already have.

My attempt at a list is here; click here (And listed below)

This really is at the top end of my budget, so if anyone can help with that, it'd be smashing.

  • I struggled to decide between GeForce GTX-650 and Radeon 7770, but the Radeon has better Texel rate and this particular one has 2GB RAM.

  • Seagate Barracuda HDD or WD Caviar Blue?

  • Could I get away with a lower-wattage PSU?

  • Also I have no idea about monitors, would like a HDMI 24" one ideally.

Any advice or comments would be much appreciated, thanks!

Your links are not working, the radeon7770 requires 450w psu min so buy a 550w to leave some head room, your always safer to buy the motherboard, processor and ram from the same supplier

The CPU cooler is ideally for a mini ITX PC. Apart from being a pain to fit I'm not sure they are enough for a 125W CPU. I had a Zalman CNPS2X MINI-ITX CPU COOLER and that was worse than the stock cooler on a 125W Quad core - temps in the 80s C at modest load. Replaced with a click here and can't get the temps above 53C after over-clocking and 4 hours on full load.
