Tesco Hudl tablet

Tesco has got off to a good start with its Hudl launch, selling 35,000 of its own-brand tablet.

From rumour to supermarket shelf, Tesco's Hudl tablet was once a myth but after going on sale at the beginning of this week has been selling like hot cakes. Shifting 35,000 units in the space of two days is not a bad effort at all.

The Hudl undercuts key rivals in the budget tablet market including Google's popular Nexus 7. Tesco customers can get the Hudl for just £60 worth of Clubcard vouchers. A scheme called Clubcard Boost doubles their value.

"Tesco has sold 35k Hudl tablets in the last 2 days, says boss Phil Clarke - may be short on stock next week" Tweeted Jennifer Creevy, deputy editor of Retail Week.

The Hudl has been generally well received by reviewers, including ourselves. Most are surprised at the relatively decent specifications and build quality considering its low price.

In response to the Hudl's early popularity, Amazon has dropped the price of its Kindle Fire HD, its equivalent tablet. Coincidentally it has dropped the price by £40 to, you've guessed it, £119.

Amazon has announced new editions of the Kindle Fire range including high resolution HDX models, but there are no signs of the tablets hitting the UK yet. See also: Amazon Kindle Fire HDX: Release date, price and specs

Aside from its low price, the Hudl has features which might tempt buyers including a microSD card slot and Micro-HDMI port. It also has full access to the Google Play Store.
