Microsoft has announced that it will bring its Surface 2 tablet with 4G mobile connectivity to the UK with a May release date.
The Surface 2 4G is available to pre-order in the UK from today from the Microsoft Store. It will then go on sale come 8 May with selected retailers including PC World and Currys. The Windows tablet is available in a 64GB and has a price of £539. See also: Top 8 best Windows 8 tablets: the best Windows 8 tablets you can buy.
Windows 8.1 is pre-installed on the Surface 2 4G – with Office Home & Student RT and Outlook RT - and like the Wi-Fi only model, it comes with an nVidia Tegra 4 processor and a 10.6-inch ClearType Full HD display.
Importantly though, it adds a micro-SIM card slot which is capable of offering 4G LTE mobile data connectivity 'allowing more people to stay connected and be even more productive on the go'. The 4G model of the Surface 2 only weights 10g more than the Wi-Fi only model.
Microsoft said that "new customers will receive free Skype calling to landlines in more than 60 countries for one year, unlimited Skype Wi-Fi available at more than 2 million hot spots worldwide for one year, and 200 GB of free OneDrive storage for two years."
The software giant recently announced that Windows will be free to manufacturing partners for 9in devices and smaller at its Build 2014 developer conference.
