Recently Asus revealed that the new model of the popular Nexus 7 tablet would launch this month and gave a list of its core specifications. Now Android Central has managed to obtain some images of the Nexus 7's successor.

There's also a video (below) but it's poorly shot and doesn’t give much away. From the pictures we can see the device has a similar design to the original Nexus 7 but comes in black rather than brown.

Most importantly, there is a 5Mp rear facing camera which current Nexus 7 doesn't offer. Things like the microUSB port and buttons remain as they were.

It's expected that the Nexus 7 will come with a new version of Android, 4.3 Jelly Bean. Other specs include a 7in screen with a 1200x1980 resolution, NFC, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 quad-core processor and 2GB of RAM.

Google will likely keep storage at 16- or 32GB and offer a Wi-Fi only and an alternative with cellular data –4G LTE we would assume.

Android Central isn’t sure whether the device is a prototype or the finished product. Google might not even be partnering with Asus for the next-generation Nexus 7 tablet so we'll have to wait and see.

Google Event 24 July

As well as Asus stating that the new Nexus 7 would arrive this month, Google has gone and scheduled an event on 24 July in San Francisco. It will be hosted by Sundar Pichai, senior vice president for Android and Chrome.

Stayed tuned for all the new Nexus 7 news, specs, features, release date and more.
