Surface RT price cut UK

Microsoft has given its Surface RT a 30 percent price cut in the lead up to launching a new model of the tablet.

The firm's first tablet price has been slashed by £120 as it prepares to launch a new model later this year. The Surface RT now costs £279 instead of £399, meaning it only costs £10 more than Apple's iPad mini. The discount represents a saving of 30 percent.

The larger 64GB model costs £359 and adding a black Touch Cover costs an extra £80 when it's bundled with the device.

We confirmed last week that the tablet would be dropped in price in the US but it was unclear whether the discount would be applied outside of the states. See also: Microsoft to update Surface tablets and introduce price cut.

While the Surface RT is a significant amount cheaper, the Surface Pro model remains at £719 and £799 for the 64GB and 128GB models.

A slide from Microsoft's Worldwide Partner Conference has confirmed an "Update to Surface RT" and an "Update to Surface Pro" are part of the company's future plans. It is thought that the new Surface models will arrive sometime in the next year.

The new Surface Pro could well be equipped with Intel's latest Haswell processor while the Surface RT running Windows 8.1 will likely run on a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor.

Microsoft's slide also showed that there will be new accessories for its tablets and that they will come in new colour options.
