Hewlett Packard (HP), projects a 1.8 billion population growth in Africa by 2035, this means there will be a 49% energy consumption increase and an estimated 43% increase in carbon emissions in the world. Bruno Zago, HP's Environmental Manager UK and Ireland says technology contributes to 2% of the world carbon emissions of which 55% of this comes from PCs, monitors, printers and telephones, 45% are from data centres.

Through an awareness program held between 20th and 26th March in Milan, Prague and Marrakech, HP aims at leading a world shift towards more sustainable printing by creating opportunities to use technology in increasing energy efficient and delivering low carbon emission product solutions. The event was focused on how customers from SMBs to large corporates can reduce environmental impact to their printing.

"69% of technology leaders worldwide cite reducing energy cost as the top motivation for pursuing green IT", says Bruno. Now that we cannot have a paperless society, the company is forced to optimize resources through providing its customers with technologies that increase efficiencies and reduce waste. As 300,000 plus employees rely on HP infrastructure for their operations, the company provides intelligent technology to help them maximize performance and make decisions faster. For example the HP's Power Assistant features in notebooks show amount of carbon usage, when the computer is being used.

Every day HP ships 110,000 printers, 75,000 personal systems, 30,000 online photo orders and 3,500 servers. This is not an act of boosting but a thought to operation equipment manufacturers, what happens to all these electronics when they become obsolete? How much plastic is left on the ground? Bruno says OEMs should think of a good strategy to handle their products when they become of age.

In a bid to care for the environment, the company has been responsible to reduce the amount of plastic and other materials from its products right from their design stage. The "Design for Environment" has three pillars, to come up with more energy efficient products, through materials innovation, reduce the amount of materials used in the products and develop materials that have less environmental impact and more value at end-of-life, and design equipment that is easy to upgrade or recycle.

Through its hardware and software solutions, HP has come up with new innovations that put the environment first in the product life cycle. For instance the Compaq 8200 Elite Ultra Slim desktop PCs, uses less energy than a 60W light bulb, its small size means few materials are used to manufacture it and less to dispose when the computer becomes obsolete, its protective packaging is made of 100% recycled molded pulp instead of oil based polythene cushions.

With HP power assistant, users can measure and manage desktop computers and note book's power use. It makes it easy for them to manage power settings by monitoring and converting energy consumptions into equivalent carbon emissions to the environment and cost saves. Organizations and individuals can identify and manage energy costs.

In Europe, Wynyard, HP's new data centre designed to be energy efficient and produces half emissions of a typical data centre. The companies designed and build the data centre taking advantage of the local geography and climatic conditions for cooling, have reduced energy consumption by 40%.

Since 1987, HP has recovered 2.36 billion pounds reused or recycled electronic products, and customers have been able to save 1.4 billion kilowatts of electricity through 2010 by using high volume HP desktop and notebook family.

HP Planet Partners Return and Recycling Program facts

Operating since 1991, the HP Planet Partners return and recycling program enables simple, convenient recycling of Original HP inkjet and LaserJet supplies across 50 countries, regions and territories worldwide (including 35 countries in EMEA) covering approximately 90 percent of global print cartridge sales.

HP makes it easy for customers to recycle cartridges through Planet Partners. Businesses can simply go to www.hp.com/recycle to order collection boxes for the cartridges they wish to recycle. The turnaround time for used cartridge collection is just five business days. Consumers can order free return postage envelopes and labels from the same website. Because all HP inkjet cartridges and LaserJet toner cartridges returned to HP are recycled through HP's state-of-the-art processes, customers can be confident their print cartridges are recycled responsibly and diverted from landfills.

Between 1991 and 2010(1), HP has recycled a cumulative 200,000 tonnes of returned cartridges--equivalent to 389 million LaserJet and ink cartridges.

In 2010, customers returned and recycled 69 million HP ink and LaserJet toner cartridges through the HP Planet Partners program, representing a weight of approximately 48 million pounds (21,000 tonnes).
